Question: How long until the world ends?
Answer: A few weeks… January 25
KEEP CALM: The world isn’t really going to end. No new prophecies based on aligned stars. No fresh forecasts found in any old books. No need to run around your local supermarket stocking up on tinned meats and powdered milk (unless that’s your vibe anyway) Just brand new beats from Black Sun Empire and State Of Mind.
Headbutting 2015 with apocalyptic force, New Zealand duo State Of Mind continue the brutal vein of form we witnessed in 2014 that culminated with them winning Best Album in last year’s Drum&BassArena Awards with their collaborative Until The World Ends EP, a powerful five tracker on Blackout.
“It features a guest vocal by Kiwi rapper PNC on the title track,” the duo explain. “There’s also the number one tune Ego and the long time dubplate fave Moonbox to name a couple. We have high hopes for the EP.”
State Of Mind will be backing up the release with an alarmingly heavy tour schedule comprising an Australia tour with Andy C, two European tours, another New Zealand and Australian tour before heading to America.
“We will certainly be racking up the air miles! All the while we will be working away on our next album project for Blackout,” they reveal. “We’ve made a few tunes now but its still a long long way off. The hardest part of any album is the start!”
And the best part of any album is listening to it. What with them winning Best Album last year, we thought we’d find out what State Of Mind’s top five albums of 2014 were. What do you think of their choices?
Mefjus – Emulation
“This is such a great album. The production is so varied and tight. It works in the club too. Mefjus really is one of the best producers around at the moment for us. I was a bit surprised to see it on Critical which was a minimal drum and bass label I thought, but that’s another story I guess…”
Noisia – Purpose
“Technically this is an EP, but it has eight tracks on it, so lets call it an album! A real return to form for Noisia. I think we played at least four or five tracks from this release, with my fave being Shaking Hands.”
Optiv & BTK – Blackjack
“These guys are the bread and butter of the tech DJ sets. I always play at least five or five Optiv and BTK tracks in any set. The production is always great and the vibe seems to fit anywhere from peak time to rolling.”
Various Artists – Tales of the Undead
“This was a compilation released by our good friend Jade, on Eat Brain records. It was a good length album with lots of tracks we smashed. Artists include Jade, Chris Su, L33, Mindscape, Disphonia and more. The artwork was also killer, it is on all Eat Brain releases.”
State of Mind – Eat the Rich
“We liked our album so why not include it in this list?”
