With a double decade pedigree as a foundation DJ, producer, label owner and mastering engineer, Sappo’s skills need little introduction. The attention to detail he invested on this samplepack should come as no surprise, either:

“It took over a year of construction,” he explains. “I had to trawl old floppy discs and DAT tapes then do a LOT of MIDI programming. Then I had to remaster them at my analogue mastering suite. So yeah, quite a long time!”

Sourcing, creating, updating and essentially document the influential role of kit such as the Juno 106, Roland MC 505, Roland D-10, Yamaha CS2X, Yamaha SY85 and consistently coveted AKAI S950, Sappo has returned to the source where everything we know and love about drum & bass has developed from.

“The hardware game, as many producers will tell you, is never ending. But bottom-line, you got to aim for warmth, fatness and character,” he says of outboard kit. “I always say to people try and get a sampler of some sort. They’re going up in price now so get on it quick! Personally I’d recommend the Yamaha A-series for overall creativity and warmth. It’s got great built-in effects… I made so many big tunes on that and still have one!”
