Audio‘s a lethal, vibrant live prospect, a visual fusion of all he does. The physical embodiment, period. Yet the title of the recent ep on RAM Nil By Mouth almost implies the opposite, that something is actually being suppressed perhaps? Silenced? We’ll get to that. Meanwhile…
Hi Audio: what are you doing right now? Right this minute?
Right now I’ve just booked in my car to get the rims powder coated matt black and before that I booked another tattoo appointment.
Lots has happened since we last spoke and it’s been a wicked year for you… the output’s been slamming!
Yeah it’s been a good year, and I’m looking forward to what 2015 has to hold!
How has it been on the live front?
Well I missed one of my usual favourites, the Let it Roll festival in Czech, from being in hospital so that was gutting, but definite highlight was closing the mighty Arcadia stage at Boomtown Festival. That was epic and it was the rare occasion my missus was there too.
Hospital? Does this connect to the ep title?
The name is from me having a short stay in hospital earlier this year during summer, and I was “nil by mouth” for four days until they decided they weren’t going to operate, so that’s where that it’s from.
Back to the live front, what producers are finding their way into the box, what stuff are you drawing?
Gridlok, Upbeats, Mefjus , Prolix, Noisia etc etc the usual suspects really, there’s so many talented producers doing their thing.
There’s always great tunes about.
On the subject: ‘Ultron’ from the ep blew my socks off when Friction dropped it, when did the tune arise?
It was one of the first I did for the EP actually, very easy one to roll out once I got my head around the riff. The old ‘Ultron’ samples were already on the system and they just seemed to match the vibe of the tune.
Speaking of production, what changes have there been for you over the course of this year? I find it interesting how things change, so what would you say are factors that have altered a bit for you?
I wouldn’t say I change my techniques; in fact some things I insist on doing are some of the first things I discovered but refined, plus my understanding of music and its production is always growing… hence I’m better able to express what’s in my head and quicker.
I’d also add that I like different vibes so I don’t like to do the same thing consistently.
Back to the ep, tell me about ‘Break It’ from the ep?
I just wanted to make something a little more understated that would maybe have more life and use within DJ’s sets, instead of making statement pieces all the time. It’s just old vibes with a modern twist, definitely one of my favourites to make.
Earlier this year we had the dual onslaught of ‘Heads Up/Stampede’ on RAM for you, so what’s been like to be part of the RAM family in general?
Very good: the guys in the office know what they’re doing so it’s a real weight off the shoulders to just think all I have to do is write music.
I’m always thinking of big cinema moments, big films when I hear Audio! The very cool, very inventive ‘Gotham’ continues this on the ep… are you inspired by films as such?
Yeah it’s kinda my signature I suppose. I love movies and if I see one that I really enjoy I usually make a tune about it.
And I’m a sucker for a good movie quote ha ha.
