Better late than never, we finally managed to tear Wilkinson away from the studio for a quick chat about his latest single ‘Tonight / Pistol Whip’, music production and what 2012 holds in store for him.
“I always try and write a tune that is on the other side of the Drum & Bass spectrum to the previous tune I have written.
I’m the kind of person that gets bored easily so I think this reflects on the music I make. I’m trying, as an artist, to create a diverse catalogue of different sounding tunes that all have a similar production sound to them. That’s what I want to tie all of my tunes together at the end of the day.
I want some one to be able to listen to a minimal track by me and then a dance floor tune by me and recognise a consistent sound throughout.
This is always a major factor that I consider when thinking about the tune I am about to write.
Tonight
I wrote this tune just before the summer of 2011. The concept was originally based around the idea of a Miami Beach, summer, palm trees, and beautiful women.
I’d found a pad sample that I really loved and had wanted to use for a while and then this really powerful hooky vocal.
The drums took the most time in this tune. I needed them to cut through the mix and drive the tune but not be too ‘in your face’. I’m really pleased with the reaction this tune has received. It’s been play-listed on BBC 1Xtra and had great DJ support across the board.
2012
I’m really looking forward to 2012 and seeing what it has in store for me. My gig schedule is already full up to April which is a great sign, including a U.S tour with Cyantific, a New Zealand tour and U.K & European shows in between. I’m looking forward to the festivals in the summer as well!
Regarding my releases, my next single is-scheduled in for around May, I’m really excited about this one. As well as having a great record label behind me, I now have a great management team behind me.
I’m fully in album mode at the moment and I’m in the studio every day of the week, and if I’m abroad then I’m writing music on my laptop! I’m also doing a few side projects working on music for other artists and also writing music for adverts.
You can also expect a new production tutorial from me soon.”
The massive single ‘Tonight / Pistol Whip‘ is out now on Ram Records.
