Ladies and gentlemen, it’s awards time (again)!
Just as the dust has settled from our Drum&BassArena Awards 2012, comes The Drum & Bass Awards 2013. With a scene so rich in talent and creativity, there’s more than enough space to two award ceremonies in the scene. Plus, if we’re honest, we’d like to pledge for your votes, too!
We gave the brains behind the event a call. The one and only MC Magika…
“At the end of the day it’s a glorified rave,” he grins. “It celebrates the scene with a big party. The ceremony is 30-45 minutes and is held about midnight to one o clock. Then it’s back to the beats mate!”
With a line-up that boasts the likes of Andy C, Friction, Hype, Danny Byrd, Ayah Marar, Crissy Criss, MistaJam. DrumSound & Bassline Smith, Matrix & Futurebound, DJ Die & Jenna G, Mampi Swift, Grooverider and Shadow Demon Coalition, it’s not a glorified rave… It’s a glorious rave. It takes place in the heart of the country – Birmingham’s Rainbow Venues – and we can actually thank Magika’s missus for the event.
“Back in the day, about 1999-2000, Knowledge did the sit-down style awards ceremony and Accelerated Culture did the ravey one. They both stopped and I started thinking… Why can’t we host one?” the Birmingham-based MC tells us. “My missus told me to leave it. But after about three years I thought ‘nah, three strikes and you’re out!’ so we started thinking about it more and more. 2006 she said ‘you know what? You’re right’ so we did it. When you guys came along I saw we both mirroring what those guys were doing back in the day. I love that.”
We love it, too. There’s more than enough to celebrate in drum & bass to warrant two awards shows. You can grab tickets here. And, most importantly, you can vote for us here!
