Sunday September 21: Save the date as drum & bass and sporting history are about to be made once again…
Some of the scene’s biggest names will be dusting off their stripes and teaming up for the second Drum&Bass All Stars Football Fundraiser.
The aim: to raise funds and awareness of Myeloma UK a charity dedicated to people suffering blood cell cancer myeloma. The charity provides priceless support for sufferers and their families while developing access to new treatments and research in how to combat this disease. It receives no government funding whatsoever.
The players: Fabio, Jumping Jack Frost, Tyke, Mampi Swift, Grooverider, Visionobi, Raggo, L.Twin FX, J.Twin FX, Shylo, Lotskee, EZM, T-Lite, Wordofmouth, Disset, Chris Inperspective, IC3, BLA and Denial… The man who established this unique event as a special dedication to his mum who suffers myeloma herself.
“It doesn’t get more real than this,” he explains. “When I first decided to raise funds in this way everyone said yes straight away. To have friends who support and influence me so much within drum & bass is one massive positive that I’ve taken from a huge negative.”
Proof that the scene goes so much deeper than filthy noises, double drops and dancefloor murking, Denial’s invitation didn’t have to be considered twice by all the players he’s recruited for the event. His invitation applies to every fan, too…
Sunday September 21, South Godstone Sports & Community Association, South Godstone. Kick-off is at 3pm and the final whistle will blow at 10pm. In between will be football, a BBQ and a soundsystem where many of the all stars will be playing. Tickets for the whole afternoon of great entertainment are only £5 and every penny the event raises goes direct to Myeloma UK. You can grab them here.
“I want this to be unique,” says Billy Denial. “There are a lot of fund raising events going on all the time and I want this to stand out. It’s not a charity many people know about. And those who do have probably been through the experience of knowing someone with myloma. I needed to think outside of the box… Everyone I know loves football and I wanted to make it fun for everyone taking part; whether you’re playing or watching or donating.”
The football fundraiser hasn’t been Billy’s only activity… Earlier this year he took himself completely out of his comfort zone and spent an entire weekend dressed as female (waxed legs and all).
“It was horrible! I hated every minute of it!” he laughs. “I had to perform at a jungle night dressed like it! I got waxed on the Friday, I played a show on the Friday, Saturday we went out for dinner and Sunday was karaoke in the local. I had to sing. I was stressing it! I did I’m Every Woman. It was stressful but it’s not about me… It’s about doing something different that people have to talk about what I’m doing, what I’m trying to achieve and donating to the cause.”
It worked: the inaugural football fundraiser and his drag-activities raised over £1300.
Now we want to help raise much more…
