This just in… A killer exclusive mix from UK bass upstart Toronto Is Broken. He’s just released his debut album Section Nine on Sub Slayers. When we called him up to blag an exclusive mix to celebrate this hallmark stage of his career he said yes quicker than an Andy C triple drop.
“Drum&BassArena got me into D&B!” he explains enthusiastically. “It was a podcast back in 2009 with an L-Plus mix. I must have listened to that podcast hundreds of times! This mix has been something I’ve wanted to do ever since!”
An exercise in roots and influences, Toronto Is Broken – real name Christian Hoffman – has included all sorts of classics that helped him define his own widescreen, tempo-flexing take on bass music.
“I wanted to show some of my early influences like Aztec and X-Ray, plus include a selection of exclusives,” says Christian who was originally a metal fan and played in a variety of bands.
“I found bands very frustrating, there was too much compromise,” he explains. “So I just started making music on my own. Mainly kind of IDM and ambient and strange breakcore. I was doing a search for artists in that field and somehow Spor came up. I’d never heard of him at the time but the minute I heard his remix of The Qemists’ Stompbox I was blown away completely. From Spor I started doing more research and quickly found myself on Drum&BassArena’s podcasts.”
