Vromm.
Quite simply stated. And if you aren’t aware, then hit play below…
Vromm, what’s your background in beats, ahead of the release of the Prototype ep via the mighty 31?
I started to play vinyl when I was nine years old. This made me curious about how to make electronic music. I was into hiphop and Detroit/Chicago techno and then in 1991 I discovered hardcore and jungle and this made me investigate break beats in general terms.
You go back with beats, is it through twists and turns? What are some musical signposts along your route?
A very difficult question to answer, soooo many. To name a few in chronological order…
Inner City ‘Good Life ; Joey Beltram ‘Energy Flash’; Urbanshakedown ‘Some Justice’ featuring Micky Finn; Princess Of The Posse ‘Follow Me No Massive’ – well, the whole ep) – Tsunami One & BT ‘Hiphop Phenomenon’…
What else was there?
When I got my Atari + Notator.
When I got my E-Mu 64.
When I played in my first big festival.
When I released my first vinyl.
In D&B what influenced you and why?
When my friend Luis Mendoza gave me a mixtape of Grooverider in 1991.
Can you talk us through the Prototype ep and what you wanted to express through it?
I don’t know if I wanted to transmit anything through my ep. Maybe I just wanted to share it and try to make people who listen to it happy.
I love ‘F Plex’: can you tell us about this tune in particular?
I think F Plex is not as dark as the rest of the ep. For me is a track with tribal drums and glitchy basslines.
I have a friend, Kagan (Lokdon) and whenever we speak or we listen to it, it makes him smile, he loves it too.
What is your fave instrument?
Electronic: Computers, Acoustic. All kind of percussion.
You spoke of a festival: what’s an event in the past that grabbed you and shook you.
When I played in FIB for the first time, in 2000. When the artist before me finished his performance, the crowd left the stage because it took too much time for the engineers to set up my stuff, but after my second vinyl was played the room filled with plenty of people again. It was great!
What material of yours is forthcoming, after the Prototype ep on 31?
I have a new track forthcoming on the next 31 album.
