TR Tactics – Thomas and René to you – have stormed in to join the Austrian ranks of Double Helix, Camo & Krooked, Fourward, Mefjus and more with the metaphysical pairing of ‘Cone/Time Slice’… & let’s face it: the duo have ALSO continued a tradition in which only D&B always has/will totally excel, which is to specialise in the totally unexpected when naming tunes!
Straight to it, I love ‘Cone’ but… why the title? I am reminded of sound speakers, of physics: you tell me!
Thanks, glad you like it.
For us the tune sounds quite mechanical, maybe because of the bass, but also from the vocal saying ‘work that’. So there was the association with a kind of metallic cone. We can’t give you any real meaning behind it, but the cool thing with such names is that people have something to think about.
This tune would work anywhere… do you write with an ear open to what you feel would be killer live?
As a DJ, of course, you always want to play your own tunes and get them played by other DJs. But we also believe that you should not focus too much on that, it’s still music and you definitely should follow your inspiration.
Do you guys produce together? I ask as I feel there’s a great sense of communication between you: you make it sound so easy.
We’ve known each other for a long time and ever since we started writing music we’ve been doing it together. Each of us has the facilities to produce at home, but this year we built a new studio and spend most of our time there working together.
Again the brill title aspect: why ‘Time Slice’? Is it just a title or, again, does it have deep significance?
Maybe because of the hackly bass slices, but again there’s no deeper meaning. It just sounded good to us and we both like the title.

Where did you produce?
We started both of the tunes in our ‘old’ room. So it took a little longer to finalize the tracks because we were busy building our new ‘working place’. Actually we can’t say why we started doing both at the same time. It was quite tricky producing these tracks because we had to adapt to the new conditions of the room and sound. But in the end we were satisfied with what we’ve made.
How did you guys come to work with Addictive Behaviour?
We really like how they work so we sent them two tracks, ‘Absolom’ and ‘Black Light’… these made up our first release with them, the whole process was really uncomplicated and they do a great job with promo. That’s why we just wanted to do another release with them and it’s still great.
What’s five tunes that you really love in D&B, maybe because they influenced you, maybe because you just love as a fan?
This is quite difficult to say, as there are so many good tracks out there and our favorites are changing all the time but to choose our 5 at the moment, they’d probably be:
Mefjus & Emperor ‘Void Main Void’
Neonlight ‘Extrasolar’
Ed Rush ‘Scarabs’
Optiv & BTK ‘Shredder’
Maztek ‘iMaz’
