The heat is ON: It’s less than one week to go until we unleash Summer Selection 2012!
40 tracks, 10 exclusives, 2 CDs; each one coated in the perfect blend of roll and soul you need for your summer soundtrack. Have you seen the tracklist yet? Check it here. Big, right?
Over the last few weeks we’ve been checking in with some of the artists who’ve contributed tunes to the release. We kicked off with AMC, Mattix & Futile, followed it up with LSB and right now we’re checking in with the Brookes Brothers who’ve given us this tried and tested summer anthem…

“We just wanted to make a really summery dancefloor drum & bass track,” says Phil, one half of the sibling super heroes. “It was kinda influenced by that Daft Punky filtered house sound. Also people like J Majik who’s nailed that really cool housey sound. That’s always been massively influential for us too. Big, dancey, summery – they were the key mission objectives for The Big Blue.”
Released on the B-side of last year’s massive radio smasher In Your Eyes, it’s still heavily tanned from last year’s summer rotations and sounding just as fresh as it did when we first heard it. Back to the future and we learn the brothers are putting the final touches to a brand new EP due out next month on Breakbeat Kaos. In a standard DJ procedure they’re keeping tight lipped besides saying there’ll be four brand new tracks and to ‘watch this space’.
In the meantime you can check out The Big Blue, along with 39 other killer tracks in less than a week’s time. It’s available from July 15 on digital and July 16 on CD. Pre-orders are available right here (phyical) and here (download).
We’re also celebrating the launch on July 15 (this Sunday!) with a very cool BBQ at a secret location.
Back to business and we move onto something Phil can talk about: the summer. Or lack thereof…
“Yeah we’re both massive summer people,” he grins. “We love the sunshine and get a bit depressed in the winter when we don’t see enough sunshine. Actually we’re getting a bit depressed this summer; it’s shambolic!”
Brookes Brothers’ Ultimate Summer Mission:
“We’ve been lucky enough to go to some amazing countries and play in great clubs. Womb in Tokyo is probably my all time favourite. But our ultimate summer gig has been a dance festival in Puerto Rico. We were playing about 100m from the sea; a proper beach rave! It was a beautiful evening, loads of people, really perfect summer conditions.
The best thing was we got to extend our trip for a couple of days and actually turn it into a little holiday. That’s a rare thing on a DJ schedule – usually it’s in, do you business and back home again – but this was just a really special gig. Plus we stopped off in New York for a few days on the way home! Neither of us had been so we made a proper trip of it. It was mindblowing, driving around, seeing all those places you already know so well.
And until we get our dream tour of South America – Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia, Brazil, Argentina, the works! – that, without argument, is our best summer mission. So far!”
Brookes Brothers summertime tip off: “We’re playing Secret Garden Party on July 22. We played there last year and were super impressed by the attitude and people and line-up. The vibe is amazing. So if you’re into great music and a good party then head there! Think I’ll make a weekend of it myself…”
