‘We just had the Wolverine Claws sat behind the speakers and then the track appeared out of the Haze… ‘
Watch out: forthcoming is the Dredd ep by Soligen & Type 2. No talking: just best to just press play on this one as it seriously speaks for itself…
‘Dredd’ stunned me with its array of vibes and amazing flow so what inspired this fantastic tune?
It was an old project that we reworked from Soligen’s archives and it just came together.
We’d just started a new plug-in that we feel changed the direction of the track.
So what inspires you guys?
We’re inspired by everything that we listen to, we both listen a wide variety of music so it’s hard to pin point a specific inspiration.
What was the spark that lead you to D&B… what originally got you?
Soligen: I’m not 100% sure but, I used to listen to Bassdrive.com alot via iTunes and a track called ‘Waterlogged’ by Random Movement captivated me.
I wanted to learn how to make music as good as that tune and it just went on from there.
Type 2: It all started in 1999 when I was 13 walking round ASDA and spotted the tape bargain bin. I pulled out a jungle tape pack and my mum bought it for me, we blasted it out on the way home in her old Audi Quattro until she told me to turn that crap off ha ha!
‘Drunk X… ‘: this simply had me transfixed with the sort of sounds you guys like to bring in.
To be honest we just had the Wolverine Claws sat behind the speakers and then the track appeared out of the Haze…
We never usually have a specific aim when start tracks and this was no exception.
In general what things inspire you? Films, art, anything… this is such adventurous D&B! I wanted to know what was behind it.
We are pretty much inspired by everything, from being at work and hearing one noise a machine makes can create an idea for a track, to listening to the radio and hearing one snare hit and forming a track around that snare.
Even our moods and emotions at the time have a big influence on our music.
‘So Lonely’ is pure liquid in the sense that Liquid Funk was always about the unpredictable, never about being just ‘smooth’… how does that sit with you?
Yeah we agree with ‘So Lonely’… it has unexpected elements in the track that can be traced back to the early Funk sounds.
It was initially an idea started by Chris (Type 2) and we finished together.
‘Steroids’ rounds it off with a total freeform expression… what was this like to work on in the studio, must’ve sounded ace!
Yeah it was real fun to work on especially because so different we feel to what usually end up with and it did sound ace on some old Technics that we sometimes use as reference.
For me each track is a different, if they were movies they’d each be set in different times/worlds for instance… how do you see them?
Type 2: I see these tracks as different planets for me, as they are all have their own unique properties.
If people want to check out other work by you, where’s some good places to start?
People can check out our Soundcloud page, we have all of our music on their that’s officially being released.
Any shouts?
Yeah, big shouts to Valentine and Marco for there huge support and of course Impish, Release, Wednesday Amelia, Saxxon, Freemind, Vandera, WordofMouth, HLZ, Mr Joesph and Chris’s new baby girl Ivy!
