Sinprint have delivered the high octane salvo ‘The Distance/Hyperlink’ via Sigma’s Life imprint. Honed from the innards of heaving clubs and – in their words – after ‘teaching ourselves how not to make music on Reason 3.0’ the duo have organically arrived. The sound is fully-fledged, ‘clean and stormy’ (to quote them again) and basically itching to be heard and felt on a big rig.
And even tends to make the odd kitten nervous…
Hi Sinprint: what exactly was the lightbulb moment where you thought ‘Must make D&B’? and why?
Ha ha, it’s always been D&B for us, yeah. We have been, and still are into other genres – some guilty pleasures – but Drum & Bass has always had that energy that we haven’t witnessed within any other genres… and that’s why we will continue to push it until our ears fail us.
We had both been DJing and promoting our own events for at least four years before we realised we needed to take it to the next level, and after a looooong stint teaching ourselves how not to make music on Reason 3.0 we finally broke through that production barrier and fell in love with that side of it.
The tunes have a great sound, loads of energy, a cool vibe so what influences you?
Venturing out of our hometowns to the bigger raves and seeing how hard everyone hits it on the dancefloor has to be one of our main influences that pushes us not only as producers, but DJs as well.
Since we started DJing almost a decade ago we have gone through pretty much all of the sub genres with regards to taste in D&B, and I guess that’s shaped us and how we perform and produce these days, taking influences from all corners of the scene and trying to work certain elements into our sets and tracks.
What influenced ‘The Distance’?
With this one we definitely always had the dancefloor in mind, and whilst we usually start off writing something melodic, 9 times out of 10 we end up with something heavier, and that was the case with The Distance. The influence for this I guess is quite directed towards the Sub Focus / Prototypes side of D&B. Obviously we are not comparing it to those guys as they are the crème, but that’s the sound we are aiming for – clean & stormy.
How did the linkup to Life come about?
We’ve known the Sigma boys for a fair few years now, mainly through events that we’ve promoted and gigs we’ve played at in Cornwall, so as our production progressed, it seemed the logical thing to send them our bits before anyone else. I think we started sending them our tunes around three years ago so we’ve been on their radar for a while, so when the rebirth of Life Recordings happened they asked us to sign and of course we were over the moon! To have our very first release on a label owned by a twice UK number 1 artist is a pretty big deal for us and for Cornish drum and bass.
What DJs rep you… and what DJs do you look up to? Is it in fact the same array of names?
Hmmmm this is a difficult one. The feedback from our release with Life has been overwhelming to say the least, with confidence-boosting comments from some of our long lasting scene favourites such as Culture Shock, High Contrast, Cyantific and Tantrum Desire to name a few. But since we started sending tunes out to people early 2013 we’ve received support from the likes of Grafix, Crissy Criss, Wickaman and obviously Sigma, so massive big ups to those guys!
Everyone previously mentioned are producers we look up to, and also the likes of Rene La Vice, Chords, Wilkinson, Break, Camo & Krooked, Fred V & Grafix… Basically anyone on Viper, Hospital or Ram ha ha ha.
Oh, and Life of course.
Can you curate ‘Hyperlink’ for us?
We didn’t have an initial plan for ‘Hyperlink’, it was a ‘get in the studio and see what we come up with’ vibe. It’s definitely on a more progressive tip than most of our other tracks, and probably one of our favourites to date as well. There’s not really a lot to say other than we keep trying to push different styles of D&B with our tracks, and I think we’ve kind of found our feet with this release, so you can definitely expect more of the same from us in the future.
2014’s been great for you I take it? Well, unless you’ve had personal pet tragedies/hauntings or rare flesh eating diseases or something… on the music front at least?
Ha, there was an incident with a flesh eating ghost kitten but we’ll save that for another time!
2014 has seen us play some pretty exciting sets such as Nass festival, Boardmasters festival and Run To The Sun alongside some events we run deep down in the feathery end of the UK which has been amazing fun as usual.
We also spent this year sitting on a few other potential EPs we produced in 2013 and had a couple of labels interested in releasing them which was quite frustrating at the time; sitting on the cusp of getting our music out there but playing the waiting game… but we can safely say the wait is over now as they should be coming out early 2015!
D&B is a hard scene to crack into, but we both know that persistence and positivity is key to achieving goals so we are just going to keep doing what we do and hope we are well received!
Any shouts?
Massive shouts to Sigma and the Life Recordings crew for allowing us to board their ship, shouts to Wickaman & Darragh from The Bughouse, Crissy Criss, Charlie G, Callum Buchanan, Grafix and everyone we have worked with over the years with our events & people who have booked us.
Friends, family and everyone who’s had to endure our tracks on loop over and over again when we’ve been producing!
