Seems like the dust has barely settled on Signs‘ last outing… now the French trio’s back: stepping up on Ed Rush’s imprint no less with ‘Acid Test’ and ‘Clockout’. Time and timing is of the essence here, as we found out. Just not for lobsters…
Signs. How are you since we last spoke?
Well it’s been all good since last time, we been quite mad busy in the studio, working on a lot of new stuff, been on the road, couple of mad BBQ Parties… life’s been quite good to be honest and yeah we’re happy on all the great feedback and really excited about our forthcoming single on Piranha Pool, ‘Clockout’ and ‘Acid Test’.
What always strikes me about Signs is the amount of devious, creative fun you appear to be having when you produce: was this the case with ‘Clockout’?
Yeah ‘Clockout”s been one of them, most of the time when the session turns into a wicked tune, you can tell that we’re having a good time. A whole lot of madness is happening in the studio, that’s for sure.
So many ideas here, how do they get harnessed/captured?
Basically there’s no formula!
Most of the time ideas comes in the studio, during the creation process and it keeps on evolving through the session. We could also have an idea before starting a tune.
And sometimes ideas can come to us after the session and we just try them out later…
How did the linkup with Ed Rush happen?
Well, in fact Lionel/Lutin knows him for years, in the early beginning we talked to him about the SIGNS project. We gave ‘Clockout’ to Audio who played it at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, and that’s where he heard it.
So he just came back to us and kinda proposed to us to be part of the Foundation of his new label Piranha Pool, and told us that he would love us to be involved in it from the beginning to shape the sound of it.
Ed Rush has been a foundation of this music from day one, how could we refuse such a proposition?
Here’s a random question that may seem cheesy but I’ll ask it as I find it interesting: you believe in signs, as in omens?
Yes we do, we believe in the ‘signs’ and we see lot of them; when you see them most of the time there’s a reason and we follow them, but it’s more a life philosophy… not an exact science.
What you see is what you get!
We just try to keep it real and follow what we believe in.
On to the ‘Acid Test’, can you take us behind the tune? Does it refer to your love of house and maybe acid?
Well it’s just one of those tunes. Like many producers will tell you ‘some day you do a tune and don’t really realize that it will be one of the DJ/crowd favorites’.
But the main idea behind it was to get a tune with an Acid lead and a Disgusting Bassline.
It could refer to Acid Techno… but a lot more to 70s Acid Tests and our love of LSD.
Who else is inspiring you on the D&B front right now… what stuff would we find you playing live?
People like Noisia, Phace are still on top of the game, but there people like Mefjus, Ivy Lab, Hybris… we really love Current Value stuff too.
And there’s a lot of new guns out there that are coming strong like Disprove, Signal, Subtention, our mate The Clamps…
Too many to mention.
And will we see you guys – all of you – in the UK live?
It’s not up to us really, but we’re definitely sure that it will happen some day.
We’re looking forward to it, playing in the HOMELAND of D&B.
Just give us a call! (contact links below)
OK, last one: when you travel, what sort of food do you insist on? I mean food is fuel plus I’m assuming you guys are cooks? The worst part of gigging is bad/expensive food. or both.
Whisky and Marley’s Coolie Breakfast…
But yeah we love good food, and cooking that’s for sure!
We’re gonna add lobster to our rider.
OK, any shouts?
In the first place Optiv for showing us the first “sign“ and giving us the opportunity of getting our first release on his label Redlight.
