SCAR, moving with a lethal single focus, have recently dropped an ep so strong it could possibly leave some pretty severe bruising. Time to get the guard up and duck under a barrage of punishing blows to get some news on this…
Hi, how’s it going SCAR? Such a fast-moving year. You sound like you’re having a good time in the studio, is that right?
Hi. We are busy working hard on new music. We are definitely enjoying producing and DJing as SCAR and developing our sound.
Do I detect some thoroughly bad ass attitude in this ep? It’s such a bulldozer!
Thanks for that. We are glad you feel that way.
The EP came together pretty organically. It does embody a lot of what SCAR is about. Dancefloor-driven with bass everywhere we can put it. Loads of energy but with subtleties and musicality.
Case in point: ‘Better Than Me’ sounds like it wrote itself. What inspired?
‘Better Than Me’ is inspired by our love of old skool drum programming and the underground sound that we have loved since we got into this music. It’s about energy really on that one.
The SCAR vibe I think is really exploding and growing: it’s splintering in all directions, so much energy. How does that sit with you?
We’re thrilled that people are liking what we are doing. It’s incredibly humbling to get such positive feedback about our music. The Better Than Me EP which was just released on Metalheadz is a good indicator of that.
People have been nice enough to message us letting us know that there is no clear favorite from that release. Everybody seems to favour different tunes from that EP which encourages us to continue to write all types of drum and bass as well as other genres of music altogether.
As master producers, how is the SCAR mindset developing: has it changed from a year back, in terms of how you produce NOW?
Essentially we still produce the same way, but our ‘sound’ is more focused.
Every time we write a new piece of music we learn or achieve something new, or we might use a new plug in etc etc. It’s a constant learning process.
The most important part of our music and also our creative process is ‘vibe’.
Back to the beginning of this chat, what’s a highlight of 2015
Playing for Metalheadz at Fabric in Room 1 straight after Goldie & Dillinja doing a b2b was surreal. Also Metalheadz 20th anniversary at Wire in Leeds was fantatstic too.
What can we next look forward to, SCAR?
Next up will be a three track release on Metalheadz in a couple of months or so which includes a collaboration with our good friends AI. We also have a release forthcoming on Dispatch called ‘Skank Demon’ which features vocals from Visionobi.
On top of that we will have another collaboration with AI which will be on their very recently announced album due out on Metalheadz later in the year, as well as a few other things which we will let you know about soon.
