When it comes to breakthrough releases from new producers, this week’s champ is – hands down – Ownglow.
A 17 year old beatsmith who’s upped sticks from Arizona to the UK to pursue his D&B dream, he was swiftly snapped up by Pilot Records who delivered his first official release this week: Gold / Tension.
With a sound that seems at odds with his age, we tapped him up and checked his heritage respect levels. We were very pleased with the results. Below are Ownglow’s three most inspiring classics. And below that is a killer mix in which he rinses 28 tracks in 28 minutes.
Something tells us Ownglow’s light is only going to get brighter and brighter…
Wax Doctor – Heat
“A very classic tune… And one of the most influential for my drum works, I really love the natural swing and the style it brings.. It really turned me on to the Think break, which I do use in a lot of my productions…
Origin Unknown – Valley Of The Shadows
“Truly, not many words need to be said about this record. One of the most legendary tunes ever conceived, again utilizing crisp shakers and a natural rim shot click snare, it’s a beautiful track and a big influence on my atmospheres as well..
DJ Die and Jenna G – 1000 Soul Songs
“I was really taken by surprise when I heard this tune, it took a lot of the late 90s sounds I’ve heard in cartoons growing up, the soul influence, and turned it into something amazing. The snare on this always makes me blush! A good combination of classic soul drums and a feel of disco, I really want to experiment more using drums in this style.”
