Quentin Hiatus took time out to talk about his pure, genre-defying Time Continuum which you should play at maximum vol.
Spaced.
Can you take us behind ‘Time Continuum’? Breakdown is utterly, totally WOW. The dub vibes on this is sensational. as is the older synth sounds, amazing.
My goodness! Thank you! About one year ago, I started heavily saying “f**k it” and experimenting. Started writing tunes at around 157 to 160 bpm leaning on more of a techno, industrial and dub sound. Made quite a few tunes in this arena.
‘Time Continuum’ was one of the first tunes in this creative era for me. I really wanted it to sound dubby but machine-like at the same time. Mechanical sounds one can only hear in space. I’ve been working with rolling out 4×4 sections of my tunes. I love constantly hitting kicks.
Have you been working within this BPM for some time?
I have, honestly: I started in with 157 to 160 to maneuvre my love for 4×4 into my tunes again. I’ve always tried to get 4×4 kicks into my tunes.
At 170, it can be a bit tough as the tempo picks up so much, I have no problem with this but lol.
Just like when I was making tunes at 140, I find that 160 range gives needed space for more creativity.
The cover is great and makes me think of space, of how humans see/define ourselves or, worse, some don’t.
Oh man, The cover art is breathtaking. Seth Grym created it. He runs Onset Audio. He’s one of the most talented designers I know.
I agree, this whole project reflects that which defines us. This piece defines where I was at the time of writing the tunes.
Introspection is always part of my process.
Take us into ‘Gully’. It’s a beautiful track.
Again, thanks for the kind words.
‘Gully’ was created out of pure experimentation and personal anxiety. I had been dealing with some pretty tough life decisions at the time and needed a way to express the conflict within.
I went to techno sounds and used lots of saturation to make a unpolished, distorted piece of music. The tune progression is chaotic and unpredictable. Exactly how I felt at the time.
Can you give us five tunes that inspired/that you like?
Ha ha, I only have four really. I’m a bit of a musical hermit these days.
Caribou ‘Odessa’
Caribou ‘Leave House’
Busta Rhymes ‘Dangerous’
Kid Cudi ‘Cleveland Is the Reason’
I imagine you playing live almost like Miles Davis did things, with people arranged around the stage, even sat on floor… does that appeal to you? An ensemble? The Quentin Hiatus Ensemble.
Man, I’ve always loved live performances and musicians. I saw the Postal Service with my wife a while back, the lead singer was running all over the stage singing, playing lead guitar, bass, drums and everything. I was so inspired by that.
Tell us more about what you have planned. You and FLD.
Well, I plan to release lots more music this year. I’ve had an album written since the beginning of this year. I’m letting the project marinate a bit. It’s really reflective of who I am.
I have releases from the FLD camp coming of course. I’ve signed some exciting new artists. Nuaru will be releasing an ep and new artist pick up In_Different will debut soon.
Stay tuned!
Quentin, any shouts?
Love and light to my wife Simone, Big love to the FLD camp, Aaron, Ross, Don, Tommy, Jeremy, Eugene and all others.
