QO steps up on the Eatbrain roster… in itself an intimidating statement and prospect, sort of akin to saying ‘Ah: here comes another large seething biomechanoid mutant warrior, intent on removing my spine and causing major structural damage to my surroundings’ as anybody down with the Eatbrain way of doing things will attest.
Well, check the cover art for an clue.
QO‘s from Brusperk, ‘a small city just next to heavy industry heart of the Czech republic, Ostrava – mecca of Czech neuro-tech D&B and cool vibes‘ as he puts it… and we spoke about the pixel-destroying Atari X ep which features Computerartist and Ryme Time, out on vinyl now, full release 19th.
There’s also a creepy-puppet-related story. Yes!
Atari X: can I ask where the ep title in general comes from?
I grew up on old Atari games. I still love it.
I have a room in my basement with old PCs, an Atari, ZX Spectrum plus billiards, a bar… lots of fun in there.
I’m not sure which game it was, but that beep sound from ‘Atari X’ was recorded there.
I love ‘Cyber Ninja’. There. It’s public. This tune with Computerartist rules.
Glad you like this one! Computerartist is the first person who sent me a message – happened to be via myspace – that my tracks are cool, and in fact a first person which I worked on a tunes together – also a great friend. ‘Cyber Ninja’ is first track we made after a very very long time, and it’s just because we DIDN’T get drunk during the production. There’s a lot more collabs to be revealed.
How did you choose who to work with on the ep, it’s a cool range of people.
It’s just people I deeply respect and maybe it’s just a matter of my personal fortune, like in ‘The Fuse’. I was looking for some vocals for this tune, so I tried to contact Ryme Tyme, I did not believe that he’ll get back to me but he replied the same day that he likes the track. Ryme Tyme! A legend, working with me? That day MORE than a dream come true for me. Thank you Sean!
You’ve got a great DJ reputation. Do you feel you’re a DJ first OR a producer first?
12 years ago me and a friend of mine bought a decks and a few vinyls as we wanted to be DJs. But after a year or two I realised that I want to make my own tunes, so we sold them to buy proper speakers, keys and some shitty audio interface – from that time I was just a so-called ‘producer’.
So till the time that my track ‘Transmission’ – released on Disturbed – it’s about four years that I play out regularly. It’s a draw ha ha.
How did ‘Killcode’ remix come about? So, so ugly.
Eatbrain boss Jade comes up with an idea of ‘Killcode’ remix at one stage, what can I say? Mindscape did a great job on this one I think.
Your tune ‘Evil Dead’.. incredible, disgusting groove. Which inspired: the original film or that remake.
I love the original movie, it was super funny, but I almost forgot about it! When I saw that the remake was made, I said to my girlfriend that we need to see it. So we did.. It wasn’t really good, but…
The ‘You are all going to die tonight’ sample is something that really helps the atmosphere before the evil bass drop ha ha.
SO I have to ask: five DISTURBING films from you?
I’m not really a fan but I’d say Srpski Film, Antichrist, Evil Dead was fun… also the old Shocking Asia documentaries are pretty, well, shocking.
Back to question one and the scene near you, what’s the scene like with you? Any memorable snapshots?
I have a hundreds of great memories to various parties and people, its just awesome to visit so many places, meeting so many new faces.
There was an Christmas Eatbrain night here in Ostrava few weeks ago, we get totally drunk, we smoked something rolled from 24k gold paper… and from that night I just remember that we were playing billiards with Jade (EB boss) in some scary masks from the local puppet museum.
Any shouts?
Props to the Eatbrain family, Jade, Mindscape, Ryme Tyme, my man Computerartist, Zombie Cats, Telekinesis, Hoofbeats, Dvoika.troika crew and all the great people of drum and bass world.
And yeah, see you on 17th January in Bristol!
