Need a little Monday pick-me-up?
Look no further… The Qemists are back with their first fresh stuff in over two years. Entitled The Way I Feel, it’s the Q-crew at their most rugged and anthemic. What’s more; it’s free! We caught up with them to chat massive crowds, nerdy production and their love for good old D&B.
But first, a quick buzz on this new track is in order…
Heavy, right? Tune in to their Facebook page this Wednesday (June 19) and it’s yours. With such a long period of radio silence we thought we’d check in with them and see where the devil they’ve been. Turns out they’ve been a bit busy…
“We’ve been touring,” says Leon, one third of the trio. “In the last year we have played our biggest ever show to a crowd of 250,000 and our biggest ever DJ gig to 25,000. And the rest of the time we’ve been in the studio.”
And then some; Leon explains how the last two years of studio science has led to big Hollywood tie-ins and star-studded co-labs. Most importantly, though, like all the best D&B players, they’ve continued to build on their well-documented passion for headscratchingly complex production know-how.
“We like to take our time and get things sounding right,” he admits. “Not just a good mixdown, but we like to try and evolve our sound to stay current. But it’s not always easy, and as music moves forward we have to think of new ways to bring those sounds together. There’s a lot of trends which come and go, but you have to challenge yourself not follow them, but to let the influence what YOU do. We can’t un-learn what we have learned in the studio, so even if the sound changes, that stuff we have always loved is still going to be in there.”
Read between the lines and you get the impression the trio are happy to have only dipped their toes in the dubstep water, and not fully immersed themselves like other D&B heads have done. In fact if this quick chatter with Leon suggests anything, it’s this: they’re seriously inspired by the current state of the scene and have proudly gone back to their body-slamming D&B roots that we fell in love with in 2009 with their debut album Join The Q…
“It really feels like after the dubstep bubble D&B is making a resurgence…. Again!” laughs Leon. “It feels like a natural time to put stuff out again. It just has to evolve and move forward. After all, how many D&B top 10 records have we had in the last year? Anyone who says a particular scene is “dead” has just run out of ideas if you ask us!”
It’s clear The Qemists haven’t run out of any ideas! Stay tuned to their socials to see what’s coming up next!
