No one told me about the flames… my eyebrows were getting singed!
Prolix is setting lots of things things ablaze with the new Transcendent ep on Trendkill. Not just his eyebrows. Warning: if you don’t have a pulse you won’t get this ep.
Prolix how’s things?
Wicked thanks! Glad that the EP is finally out there for everyone to hear.
This ep is great. Why the title of the ep, was it a case of you overcoming something, or maybe a statement of the art of producing/creating?
I think it expresses what I’m always trying to do with each release and that is to go above and beyond people’s expectations and previous experiences of my work in particular. It ties in with my own ambitions and visions and the evolution and advancement of the label.
The EP shares the name of the track I wrote with Michael (aka Misanthrop) and it certainly transcended my expectations of our first work together.
Speaking of, love the collabs here, was it something where you purposely went AFTER people to get certain inflections and moods to the piece, or was it all organic? Rido is one, on ‘Exploration’, he is a curious and very interesting character.
The purpose was to work with a few new people, mainly that I had never worked with before (aside from MC Coppa) and have the EP dedicated to collabs. They are all artists that I admire musically and have the fortune of being good friends with. Rido is someone who I have known of for a long time and have more recently played parties together, which is how the collaboration came about.
He had been doing a lot of great work on Metalheadz, and I wanted to try and incorporate some of his great edits and soundscapes into a collab. It ended up turning out really well, with people such as Black Sun Empire, Audio and Pendulum all supporting it in their DJ sets. He is also a trained Audio Engineer which is very handy!
And the mighty Misanthrop which you’ve mentioned, the killer title track! Crissy Criss was blown away, so am/was I. Describe the creative process here, if you would?
Ha ha yes it was a great response from Crissy, loved the rewind. We initially had a studio session but due to flight problems it ended up being over the net. We both use Cubase and so it meant some back and forth with the project. He is an absolute beast of a producer and a top bloke so it was nothing but an absolute pleasure working with him, and I’m ecstatic with how it turned out.
What music are you listening to now that is destroying? What are you into?
All the guys I worked with – usually everything they write! Especially Mob Tactics – they just get better and better. I have known them for a while and are now signed to MTA and doing great things.
The biggest tunes in my sets right now though are probably Audio’s – the man can do no wrong!
With music this tearing, this firing you must get out and play a lot… any road stories?
I got to play at EDC Las Vegas this year for Insomniac which was amazing.
I didn’t expect much as I was playing fairly early in the night but I ended up playing to about 10,000 people on a stage with fireworks and pyrotechnics! No one told me about the flames….felt like my eyebrows were getting singed! I only got to stay there one night but I hope to go back again soon!
Back to your roots: what was your original fave D&B, maybe a few picks that you loved, that got you into it and hooked… maybe three tunes that helped you on the Transcendent!
My love for D&B truly developed into a obsession from hearing the likes on Bad Company, Ed Rush and Optical, Konflict and RAM records stuff.
Just three tunes? That’s tough. But I definitely remember Bad Company ‘Oxygen (Drilla Killa)’ being an inspiration. When I first heard it I just couldn’t understand what instrument could make sounds like that. Talking robots or something!

‘Mind Overload’ by Ram Trilogy was another one that just sounded so futuristic and amazing. Truly inspirational and the main reason as to why I spent so long sitting in front of Cubase!!!

For a third I’d have to say ‘Slip Thru’ By Ed Rush and Optical. It’s just too good.

Honorable mentions to Stakka and Skynet for ‘Decoy’ and Konflict for ‘Beckoning’ for obvious reasons!
