Welcome to another edition of Positive Vibes. A feature series where DJs can show off their extensive collection and knowledge of music and share flavours that truly make them tingle with happiness. Last week we checked in with DJ Rap who served up some very interesting choices and today we’ve got another interesting selection from across the Atlantic. The one and only Bungle.
The Brazilian vibe maestro has been missing in action for quite some time. Memories was his last comprehensive release. A far-reaching album laced with deep textures, melodies and the stunning vocal power of Riya, it hinted at the cosmic power that his new release Aura / Astral Travel oozes by the kilo.
Tipped, hyped and screamed about by some of the biggest names since promos went out just before Christmas, this is – without argument – the first ‘big’ release of the year. We sent Bungle a few questions but judging by his answers this really should have been done face-to-face – the man’s a legend. And clearly a bit of a hippy. Welcome back Bungle… don’t leave it so long next time!
Bungle! Where’ve you been? It’s been a while since Memories!
“I’ve been here trying to find it out. I found it, and it’s called Aura. It came up just six months after Memories release though.”
It’s been a while since you’ve been on Soulr, too. How did this release come about?
“Marcus loved Good Times. That was way back in 2007. It’s been almost six years talking about ideas of how there could be a very melodic drum & bass sound. And now it’s here. Even if it took 20 years to happen it would still be worth it.”
Any interesting inspirations behind the release?
“Absolutely. Usually, I only realise what every track is about after some time. Aura is about going to the other side, turning lights off and the beauty of life coming to an end. What we all fear is actually a beautiful thing.”
What’s coming up next?
“There’s new material done. There are plans going on and off. But right now I’ll just let Aura breathe for a while.”

Let’s chat Positive Vibes. Tunes that instantly put you in a wicked happy place – no matter how bad your day is. What ingredients does a positive vibe tune need?
“I think it needs to speak to you as who you are. Being positive is being true.”
Now please give me three tunes that instantly put you in that mood…
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Out In LA (Demo Version)

“That was in one take dude! Being happy with a band is the greatest place to be. When I say band I don’t mean the ‘play three notes and make a pose’ thing. I mean jamming like that.”
Black Sabbath – Supernaut

“Oh this kills all the politeness! An endless hippie trip to nowhere, that’s my favourite vibe at any moment.”
Duderstadt & Anita Kelsey – Smile (Duende Dub Mix)

“Most of my favourite songs are those that takes me into a long journey, but this synth riff brings the whole thing straight.”
Aura / Astral Travel is out now on Soulr. Listen and download.
