When did you decide to call your new EP ‘Double Dutch‘? Whose voice is it
in that sample?
I usually suck big time at finding nice track titles, but this EP was something special so I took my time. I was thinking about using something related to my roots, so was googling and searching the word ‘Dutch’ When I saw the name ‘Double Dutch’ I thought that would be the one, because it’s an EP produced by a Dutch guy, and also a Dutch collab between a producer and graphic designer. My Dutch friends from Graphich Surgery made this amazing sleeve and when they heard the title, one of the guys pointed out that Will Smith says “double dutch” in the tune ‘Summertime.’ At that time my tune didn’t have a sample yet, so I searched for it and put it in the tune which is wicked!
What was your mission with this EP?
It’s hard to get attention by releasing a single only, so Klute and I were thinking about how to push my profile a bit. An EP always looks a bit bigger then just a single, so he offered me the chance to produce an EP. I made than 4 tracks, so we also came with the idea doing some digital bonus tracks. So during full release of the vinyl, there also will be 3 extra tunes u can only buy digital. I’m like Santa Claus, but only the summer version!
What specific equipment couldn’t you produce without?
My studio is very basic I think. I’ve got a MacBook Pro with Ableton rewired with Reason. Got an M-Audio external soundcard and the Mackies HR-824 monitors. Besides that I’ve got an amazing coffee machine, which I can’t leave out!
What animal is the sound of your music most like?
That’s definitely a Tasmanian Devil in the morning just after his shower and with a filter on his mouth. People always say that to me.
Who supports you to do what you do the most?
My parents of course. But also people like Klute and Presha, they are always hunting for new tunes and giving me a lot of freedom on their labels. My lovely agency ESP, who are giving me good advice and wicked gigs as well!
Who are you listening to at the moment?
The noisy traffic in Vladivostock. I’m in the hotel now and my window is open and traffic in this city is pretty chaos. So I’m going to take my iPod in a bit and going to listen to ODWGKTA, because I’m going to see them live this Wednesday in Amsterdam!
What do you produce in?
The first half of the day is always in my pyjamas, during lunch break I take a shower and for the 2nd half of the day I produce in my normal clothes. I have Ableton rewired with Reason, but I’m learning a lot at the moment about Ableton and hope to use it 100% one day.
What’s the weirdest thing that has inspired you to write a track?
That’s when I have hangovers and start a tune. I always get some weird ideas. I guess because I’m not thinking at that moment and it works out pretty well for me.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
Some festivals I’m playing during the summer. The Bunch of Cuts night at Cable on the 9th of July (also because it’s my birthday on the 10th). To work on more music and to travel more for gigs and meet nice new people.
