On the eve of one of the most significant and talked about albums in D&B history, namely We Gotcha by the MC Fats Collective, we had a think. Hmmmm. What would be a way not only to capture both the buzz of the compilation AND the motivation behind the music? So we put it to D&B luminaries in and around We Gotcha to simply talk about Fats and the album. Check what came back…
A Sides: Fats is like a brother to me. Our relationship goes deep back to the mid 90s. I have spent many hours on stage, in the studio and on the road with him. His voice is golden and performing live he just knows when to let the music breath and these are very special qualities.
I know it has been his dream to release an album for a long time and now he has something epic and I am more than happy to be the person to oversee this whole project from start to finish and I would do it all again if I had to. I couldn’t be there for him in person in his times of need so I feel this is my way of making things up to him.
The We Gotcha project is very special to me not only for what it has become but in the way that it has united people in the scene to come together for the cause bringing something to Fats himself for the future. This project is all about fats and nothing else. He has always been a ‘people’ person for as long as I have known him; we all love him and this is our unique way of showing it.
The full album is out May 19. In the meantime grab the first EP right here.
We Gotcha!!!!
DJ Marky: The album is amazing and the people in Brazil love him so much since back in the day when i played ‘Mercy Mercy’ by Him, Coolhand Flex and Pearl, the tracks with DJ Hype like Jack To a King and Peace Love & Unity!
Fats is the original soul man in D&B!
Crissy Criss: ‘The most unique vocalists in the Drum&Bass scene, this album is by far a great reflection of the different styles Fats can lay down.. Brilliant project!”
Tony Colman: This project reflects everything that is great about D&B, and it displays the qualities that have kept the scene fresh and building for over 20 years. Each producer is selflessly giving. Fats has one of the most distinctive voices in D&B and we all own records featuring his vocals. But the best thing about is the level of compassion the release shows.
Everyone in D&B should be rightly proud of how they all pull together when it matters.
Camo & Krooked: We love how all these artists came together for a good cause and brought Fats awesome voice back into the game. Great music!
Jumping Jack Frost: Fats has become almost a institution within the business. His unique style and smooth vocals represent D&B around the globe.
DJ Die: When you think of singers and vocalists within the Jungle / D&B scene there are few more prolific than MC Singing Fats. Were taking original foundation from day dot business. Myself and Break have worked with Fats before on a track called ‘Peace And Dub’ with is actually a straight up Dub wise cut so with this track we wanted to revisit the Dub flavours. The result ‘Foundation Dub’
dBridge: Fats voice has been a part of my D&B life, from going out and listening to him MC, to the seminal ‘Drop it Down’, to him gracing my sets with his talent. So it was as they say a ‘No Brainer’ to do this track.
Makoto: Really honoured to be part of this album and remixing a classic song for a good cause and for love.
Kid Hops: It was a thrill to work with Fats, and it’s an honour to be involved in an album project of this scope. Every artist involved gave their all to support such an inspiring and talented vocalist.
Bailey: The music quality matches the unity involved. Big!
Cleveland Watkiss : I’m gonna cut to the Chase on this and just say MC Fats should have been celebrated and supported by the scene long ago! He has sung anthem after anthem, a treasure trove of historical information, a master of his art, and the funniest person to ever be on the road with. Wegotcha is simply a collection of masterpieces.
Total Science : We’ve always been massive fans of Fats so when we were asked to be part of it the simple answer was a big YES! “What You Don’t know” is one of our favourite A-Sides and Fats tune, which we played the hell out off back in the early 2000’s. Really enjoyed being able to put our own twist on it.
Random Movement: Big big big release from arguably ‘the voice’ of this genre. Hard for me to be unbiased in my review, but I will say this: If I see the name “MC Fats” anywhere on a track, it means it is beyond good, to the point where I don’t even have to listen to it to know its great. Bravo!
Chef: Mc Fats voice is one in a million his lyrics have carried me thru Hardcore, Jungle and drum and bass that’s 25 years of great vibes from one artist, his discography is a testament to his voice and presence.
Basher: Fats is not only the voice of drum and bass but also a gentleman and great friend, its an honour to work with such a legend!
Nicky Black Market: Fats has been a part of our scene from dot and this project has something for everyone to enjoy.
Callide: Since meeting Fats in London 6 months ago, it’s been a real honour to be involved in this project on so many different levels, most recently writing a track with him for the 2nd part of the album. This project is a great testament to his legacy, and demonstrates the love that the music industry has for him.
Break: For me Fats is the sound of Jungle, I can’t imagine the perfect rave without him on the mic. My first gig abroad was with Fats and I’ve been blessed to play with him many times since. This slow dub track we made was perfect for Fats’s classic reggae tone.
