From out of nowhere, the M-Soul has covertly delivered a unique ep on the (equally super-subtle) E-Motion imprint. Imagine it in a plain envelope, slid under the door. It also includes a contribution by the entity simply known as S27. ‘Cobweb’ and ‘The Grief’. Night vision glasses are not included with this release: you simply have to feel your way around the complex.
Best to simply step in and find out more.
Your ‘solo’ tune here is ‘Cobweb’, what’s behind it?
I really like my tunes rolling and minimalistic at the same time, so that’s what I tried to get when I was making ‘Cobweb’. Lots of rolling percussion and deep basslines.
It’s the sort of D&B with a profound punch, and especially in the club environment. Could you shed some light on the live scene where you are?
I think the D&B scene in Belgium is quite good, especially in the bigger cities like Ghent, Antwerp or Leuven. Obviously there is Starwarz in Ghent, which for me is the biggest D&B event in Belgium if you are into the deeper side of D&B, but you also have a lot of smaller quality nights over here. For example Bio Bass, Isle of D&B, Steam…
And producers?
About producers, there’s a lot of talent in Belgium, you have Mtwn, Bredren, M-zine & Scepticz, Svb and also some less knowing upcoming talents like Iandys, Nativ & Numbr8.
Your influences would be very expansive, I’m guessing?
In terms of music, my spectrum is very wide. Lots of different styles of music influences me, not only D&B music. Alix Perez is by far my favourite artist. I’m also a huge Shlohmo fan.
My favourite labels in D&B are Exit and Proximity at the moment.
And in general what interests do you have?
Other interests are gaming, going out, chilling, watching True Detective, I loved series one.
Do you and S27 both work as a duo?
Nowadays we work as a duo, me and Nick (S27, image below) are both from Sint-Niklaas, and we rent a little studio to make beats.
The atmospheres on these tracks caught me…
It seems that I was in quite some dark mood that day I started ‘The Grief’ ha ha. Mostly I start with some drums and try to build up the tune from there. We always want our tunes to be clean and to have a good mixdown, which worked out nice with ‘The Grief’.
I just go with the flow and the mood that I’m in I guess.
What was your path in D&B?
I started to listen to D&B around the age of 15-16, before that it was all Punk.
One of the first D&B tunes I was hooked on was Logistics ‘The Trip’, still love it. Producing-wise it was around the age of 18 I started to make beats.
Would you consider an album? Could get lost in this vibe for days!
At the moment I’m not really thinking of an album.
I’m happy with releases here and there. I’ll just try to make new beats and then I’ll see what happens with the tunes.
And the future then? What’s coming up?
I’ll have a new EP forthcoming on a new Belgian Label, called Halogen Music. Including a collab with Mc P Fine. Really pleased with that EP.
I also got a tune forthcoming on Black Reign LTD and another two-tune EP on Violation Music.
