Loadstar‘s new release is nigh, an instantly-recognisable cluster bomb. Be prepared to be showered by synth-shrapnel: it’s raining dirty D&B all around you…
Loadstar hi. Busy?
Yeah, following on from the success of the album and ‘Stepped Outside’ we knew we wanted to work towards the next project, and whilst we’re not totally there with it yet, we’ve been working hard in the studio over the last 12 months figuring out what the best plan going forward was.
It’s important for us to get it right music-wise and we’re conscious of this as opposed to putting stuff out for the sake of it just to fill the release spots.
‘Native’ will be the first release from our new batch of music but expect a number of singles to follow on over the next few months with a view to putting a new album out in 2016.
And touring: I hear you’ve been around…
We’ve been around the block a few times! D&B is in a great place at the moment both in terms of club nights and the amount of good music that’s coming out which makes it really exciting to play out every week.
So many new tunes keep things fresh and exciting and we love updating our record box every week and working out new mixes. Sure, you have to be resourceful but it makes it easier when theres a lot of good music around.
On to ‘Once Again’… this is a piledriver of a tune.
Thanks. Yeah the idea was to create a track that was hard-hitting, aggressive and upfront sound that people have come to know us by, similar to that of ‘Bomber’ and ‘Under Pressure’ as we felt it would compliment ‘Native’ on the flip.
If you look back at our releases over the years its something we’ve always done: having two tracks that are quite different in terms of their style and dynamic but always complimenting each other and showcasing our love for the different sides of drum and bass.
What’s the spark that gets you creating in the studio? What things get you in the mode? That ‘sweet spot’ where it all starts happening.
We tend to approach things in a different way every time, but usually it will start with a couple of samples that work really well together. Then we just churn out ideas really quickly, seeing what sticks and chucking ideas back and forward.
That’s the really fun part. We’re inspired all the time, whether listening to radio or hearing a new Noisia tune or whatever. We always find listening to music blogs first thing every day is a great way to hear what’s fresh and helps get in that creative zone.
Now about ‘Native’: I love this tune, and especially the brill vocal. This is sort of like a ‘large room’ dBridge tune to me.
Thanks… love how these things come together. We started with a nice little idea that we didn’t really know what to do with, so we were fortunate enough to have a guy called Danny Shah step in on it, he wrote and performed the vocal.
Tell us more?
He came to the studio one day and we were flicking through demos and he heard it and connected with it straight away, he totally ‘got’ it. He laid something down and that session really inspired us to change the track and find the right atmosphere to make it all work.
Having a great vocal made finishing the track so much easier as it was a case of building on what we already had and shaping it to fit the vocal, and that’s actually a way we love to work.
Sometimes we get an acapella and write a tune completely from scratch around that, we come up with some really interesting results that way! Which is often what we do with a remix.
Are you off to play loads of shows now? I hear Ibiza is on the cards…
Yeah we can’t wait to head out to Ibiza as neither of us have ever played D&B out there, especially main room at Privilege. Historically Ibiza has always been a house music destination, we’ve been there loads over the years… and in terms of D&B it’s never really taken off but feels like anything goes out there now.
It’s great to see the island diversifying and thanks to Sunbeatz and also the Tuesday nights they have at Amnesia. It’s great that D&B is becoming a bit more of a key feature of clubbing in Ibiza. Other than that we are still playing North America a lot which we love, touring the usual places around Europe and Australasia… can’t get enough!
What film/TV you seen lately that you dig?
A bit late on House of Cards but that was awesome. Other faves include The Knick, Fargo and a BBC drama called The Fall. We never get time to hit the movies so tend to catch up with loads of gash films on the long haul flights…
And more about new material?
Our bootleg of David Zowie’s ‘House Every Weekend’ has gone down really well and is now officially getting released which is a great look.
We’ve got a lot of great collaborations and new music waiting in the wings. And we’re especially excited about our next release so look out for that!
