‘It’s good to hear the soul coming back in to D&B instead of the heavily limited robot growls… ‘
GLXY are back with their completely engrossing Liquid Soul ep, replete with a cover that seems to be mainlined from the mystical mainframe of Studio Ghibli… well that’s just one take anyway.
We talked about all the elements inside and decided to stretch out a bit on the roller front too, as they took us into some of their faves.
How did you hook up with Matthias and the label?
We uploaded a very early clip of ‘I Want 2’ to our Soundcloud a good few months back and he got in contact with us pretty much straight after it went up.
Take us behind ‘Make Me Feel’? wonderful tune with great tension.
Yeah it’s probably the most different tune on the EP, it starts with a really jazzy, almost classical, piano sample then rolls into a nice jungle style drum pattern. Really vibey stuff.
And ‘Kinesis’? That’s awesome.
‘Kinesis’ is a track you could say fits our sound more, it’s got a pretty deep tone to it and that eerie vocal cut on top, but it rolls out in the mix really nicely and works well with a lot of other tunes.
Probably my favourite drums on any track in the EP.
In general what did you want to impart with the ep, what vibe and feel?
We were pretty blunt with the EP title ha ha.
It’s liquid funk brought up to date with a slight computerised (synthesised?) edge. We’ve definitely taken influence from multiple genres within the D&B spectrum and fused it with our love for liquid.
And overall: how would you stand back and sum up the ep?
I suppose the overall balance of the four tracks, I would say ‘I Want 2’ has the most widespread appeal and probably the most likely to get played out. ‘Kinesis’ is a pretty deep roller, ‘Tate and Lyle’ is pretty classic liquid business, and you could say the same for ‘Make Me Feel’.
We could have made an EP with four standard rolling tracks, but we feel that our sound is more intelligent than that; so we wanted to portray that through the variation you can hear.
Where is D&B headed right now? It’s developing more and more.
I would personally say it’s about as strong as it’s ever been… in my time anyway! There are so many good producers doing great things at the moment, both the big artists and the up and comers. The same can largely be said about the labels as well.
It’s really nice to hear liquid coming to the forefront as well, some tracks are even getting in the Beatport D&B top 10!
So from that perspective it’s good to hear the soul coming back in to D&B instead of the heavily limited robot growls that have been around for the last few years!
So finishing off, what’s five mighty rollers?
Chase and Status ‘Take U There’: ridiculously good track, chase and status took the vibes all the way on this one.
Phil Tangent ‘Clouded Remembrance’: Tangent is in my opinion, one of the very top producers around.
Calibre ‘Paragov’: Not sure this guy or track needs any explaining…
Camo & Krooked ‘See Through You’: back from Camo & Krooked’s debut album which is full of IMPECCABLE tracks.
Technicolour ‘Centrifuge’: forget favourite roller, this is probably my favourite liquid track of all time.
