Talk about making an entrance… Bristol trio Ruffhouse have scored a fortnight of debuts, causing waves on both Alignment Records and, last week, Ingredients. With a distinct, stripped back fuzzy funk, the Bristol-based trio clearly mean business.
We caught up with Vega to see what their deal is. But first, let’s sample a slice of their work…

Two releases in the space of two weeks. Well played…
“It’s just happened by chance really. We wrote three or four tunes and handed them out to lots of different labels and Alignment and Ingredients were the first people to get back to us. It’s worked really well hasn’t it?”
I’d say! Which other labels did you send the tracks to?
“Well not labels in particular, but key people. I’ve been involved in the scene in one way or another for the last eight or nine years. It was easy to send the tracks to good friends I’d made. People like Doc Scott, Loxy, Thatcher, Jubei, dBridge. They’re our key people we send tracks to.”
You’ve been involved in the scene in what type of capacity?
“As a promoter, as a DJ, just generally loitering around…”
Haha, cool. Now make yourselves known…
“Chris is Pessimist who’s been releasing tracks successfully for years. There’s Tom Cooper who’s one of my best mates for five or so years, we used to go out clubbing together and got into all this together really. We moved to Bristol and did the Abstractions night and that’s how we met Kris. And then there’s me!”
How does it work as a trio in the studio?
“Well the wizard is Kris. He knows his stuff, he’s been doing it since he was 14. Tom started a few years ago and I’ve dabbled here and there. Those two are more hands-on but the three of us all throw in our influences and are very picky over the sounds we use.”
I hear you like your techno…
“Techno comes from Chris. When we met him he played us all sorts of techno that really inspired us. I’d not heard that type of production technique before; the way the tracks progress is unique and unlike anything I’d heard before.”
So what’s next?
“We’re still buzzing over the Alignment and Ingredients releases to be honest! After that we’ve got another 12 lined up on Ingredients for early next year. We’ve just done a VIP of Loxy & Resound’s Aversion. That’s been a big thing for us because they’re a massive influence. And after that we’ll be working on more new material.”
Cool, can’t wait to hear it all. Now then, standard question for these type of interviews… Tell us something about yourselves no other interviewer knows yet…
“We’re all obsessed with Fifa 2013 at the moment. It’s getting in the way of our tune making at the moment. And we’re not shy of a kebab or two!”
Nice. I’ll leave you to your footy and kebabs!
