What could be better than a session lost inside the abandoned, brownout-prone outer precinct of Enei‘s recent outing for Critical. Namely, the Goliath ep, summed up so simply by Enei himself: ‘I was searching the new ways, new ideas and I found it in six tracks.’
Let’s throw the ignition keys into the tall grass and go in, shall we?
Enei, first a small tangent: I heard about your work for the Burelom people at the beginning of the year, sounded very interesting.
I worked with the guys as a mastering engineer. I provide a mastering service for various electronic labels and artists. Their music is cool, good to work with them.
And connected in a way: there is a rough, ancient, unpredictable sound to the Goliath EP. Are you making a comment here maybe, that nature is taking over? Just a guess.
As always I tried to push my sound more. Tried to do something different and I don’t wanna stop with that. It’s funny and is always so interesting to experiment with the music like this.
But I love old jungle vibes and dark atmosphere, I think that’s two ways I work and mix it up!
I love the ‘retro’ sounds and treatments found here and there on Goliath, the treatments that could be from electronic music any time from 60s to 70s, so I have to ask, do you have a big collection of music that inspires you?
It’s always changing from week to week: for example five or six years ago I listened to a lot of Rockabilly and Roots reggae, now I’m a big fan of oriental metal music really, when it sounds so good I can get some crazy inspiration.
I always love to listen some atmospheric, soundscapes etc. just for relaxing and cleansing my soul you know. Get away from all the bullshit.
My fave is the Artefact, it’s wicked & sort of bonechilling too… could you talk us through it?
Yeah it was a long work, much longer than usual, I mean I did it for like a month so I think, my heart and soul are in that one for sure. By the way I got a little secret for this tune for the future! Keep your eyes open.
Overall, Goliath is very full-formed, it takes you somewhere, it ENCLOSES you, like the lights have gone out in the cinema and you are in this world… so is that what you intended?
Yes exactly. I always try and do things a little differently. I don’t just like to have a bunch of random tunes on an EP, there needs to be structure.
Can you talk us through the title track sir? DRS makes this really next level I feel. Chemistry!
Well I did it for fun at first, I was thinking if I could do really simple tune with taste of jungle. So I did and and just sent it to Kasra and he sent it to Delroy (DRS). It’s not really dancfloor tune but people love it when it drops, especially in UK.
Maybe it could be more dynamic and faster but at this moment it sounds dark and heavy but not as crazy as I usually like it.
This ep must have been great to get out there, to have it ‘realised’ as it were…
This release was kinda refreshing for me: since I did the Liberation EP I was searching the new ways, new ideas and I found it in six tracks, but I’m still thinking that is not enough for me. I’m going to do more music!
What is brewing with you as we speak now… what is on the horizon for you?
I’m thinking to do a second album. I got for like 3-4 tunes ready for it already. Just wanna make more music and gonna break myself with beats and basses!
You mention the UK and the live thing… when you first played Fabric (pic above), what was it like? Can you describe the vibe and the atmosphere?
That was room two and I absolutely loved it! I prefer room two for the open atmosphere and very big, responsive crowd. The first time I almost lost my ears with that killer soundsystem. That was mental!
Thanks so much sir, I love this ep.
Thanks man, that means a lot!
