Datr3ndz! Not really a name that you’ll overlook. Nor a typical phnomenon in itself a it’s the pairing of two heavyweights within D&B: Devize and Cabbie, culminating on Radius: the Movin Shabby ep, to be precise.
Hello Datr3ndz. When did you join forces?
We joined forces around 2013 to create this new collaboration.
You respectively have some considerable history…
Devize: I’m from Birmingham, making beats since 2000 been into D&B since early 90s. Back then it was called hardcore.
Cabbie: I’m from London, making music since ’97. I started DJing around ’94 and I’ve been in D&B since early hardcore until now.
There’s a totally wicked flow in the Movin Shabby ep. How would you describe it?
The best way to call our style is ‘RBT’: Rude Boy Tech.
How did the hookup with Radius come about?
Hazard is a good friend plus a big supporter of the music we’ve been producing. He offered us a release on his label Radius after we sent him a few beats, so it was a win win situation.
‘Answer Me’ is amazing, can you talk us through how the tune came about?
‘Answer Me’ flowed so easy. It came about while being in the studio on graveyard shift listening to Ed Rush & Optical’s classic Wormhole album while playing Xbox One, eating an unlimited supply of munchies which included Mike & Ike’s Candy and drinking vodka.
Who influences you in D&B? And in music generally?
We’re strongly influenced by Hip Hop but we also enjoy going back to early Virus, Ram, Bad Company, C4C tunes from the late ’90s. That’s how and why we keep our production to those kind of roots and build our tunes… with an old school techy kind of way. We also add new and current techniques. We check the odd set here and there and promos too, to check what’s new.
What does the ‘Movin Shabby’ title mean, is it good or bad?! Or is it from the sample within the tune?
Yes, it is from the Movin Shabby sample: to us the title is meant to be positively good.
… speaking of which can you take us through the title tune?
Well we needed a final tune for the ep and we decided to keep it varied but still themed to our style..
What’s next from you on the horizon? and any shouts?
We’re sorting out another ep for Radius as well as forthcoming beats in the pipeline that we can’t speak about yet on another big label. Keep it locked for 2015 you’ll be seeing us more. Follow us online for more.
Shout out to DJ Hazard for supporting, and also Majistrate.
