I like to always build my tracks with the drums first then fit the bass and other sounds around that. That’s important, hence the name DRUM and BASS in my eyes.
Damage Report steps up with his Time I Did ep for New Playaz. It’s suitably Damaging. And here’s a Report.
The title of the release is interesting, what’s behind it?
Ahh ok I knew this would come about.
The day has come.
OK, so it’s not very intresting but I really struggled with writers block and could not get out of it for a few weeks. I then stumbled across the vocal sample “well maybe it’s time I did” and it stuck.
The flow of your sound is really good, it’s something that I think Grooverider would be well into, it’s hard, but really understated too…
Thanks a lot man and yeah I’ve just sent him a few bits as it goes. DJs repping my tunes would include Hype, Logan D, Tyke, Total Recall, Nu Elementz, Jayline and Ironlung to name a few.
How did the link with Playaz happen?
Through Hype! He’d liked a few tracks I’d sent him and he played a few bits on his show on Kiss. I chatted to him which was kind of unreal: I see him as legend in the D&B scene. He said he’d be starting a new label, a sister label for Playaz and asked if I would like to do an EP for it. So of course I agreed.
I think the tune that caught their eye was the title track: it’s kind of a bit funky and got a weird flow to it but I liked it and so did Hype.
The title that made me smile was ‘Very Impressive’? It’s a killer, when did you write this track?
Thanks again. I wanted a rolling-type tune with a weird bass flow almost like it shouldn’t work, something that would catch peoples’ ears and that you could hum almost.
I think I made it to play at a gig I had in Belgium.
Speaking of the weird bass flows, makes me wonder if you have a certain batch of sounds, tricks/techniques or something in particular in your studio that you love using?
I like to always build my tracks with the drums first then fit the bass and other sounds around that for me that’s important, hence the name DRUM and BASS in my eyes.
I do all my making of sounds through various VST plug ins I have just recently bought studio monitors so most the tracks I made for the EP was with a battered pair of old speakers that were not made for studio, more ‘hi fi’ stuff ha ha.
I also like to make a a lot of bass sounds in general and go to them when I need them. I’m kind of a bass junkie so to speak… in a good way of course.
‘Handle Anything’ is killer… what’s the story here?
Basically I found it hard being new to the producing side of the scene to get heard with my music in the beginning, you get a lot of knock backs, people telling you ‘You need to work harder’… basically getting put down with how your tracks sound.
So one day I was sitting there thinking how could get a message across like ‘No I’m not letting you get me down’ because it’s all to easy for that to happen.
I found the vocal sample “handle anything”… and that’s how I felt.
There will always be people that like or love what you do.
So what about LIVE: Have you got any special tunes that doing damage (pardon pun!) live?
I’ve just come back from a gig in Belgium called Cityflow on the live front. I got sent the new Hazard ep and every tune on there is amazing… so that does some damage.
Also I got the vip of “Engulfer” from Konichi… that’s one of my faves and always makes them dance like headless zombies.
Also another one that’s getting reloads on a tune of mine called ‘Inna corner’… I got some good feedback on that too.
Any shouts?
Massive shout to Hype and Pascal, every onewho has supported me either by buying my music or playing a tune on my soundcloud, my fiance who endures hours upon hours of the sample looped drum beat and all the DJs I’ve mentioned above.
And my nan, she loves DNBA.
