BMotion‘s recent pairing on Viper’s a duel exercise in frequency/speaker wrangling ferocity… and with those combined titles it was a pretty heated respite from present arctic temperatures.
Plus a pretty hot random track selection too if you read on.
First off how’s the year been? Can’t believe another one is being wrapped up.
This year has absolutely flown by! Literally feels like January was two weeks ago! Really pleased with how things have gone on the release front and with Viper.
I think things are building nicely and hopefully 2016 is going to be an even better year.
Can I ask about the mighty ‘Ignition’ first off? It’s a fave and soooo ugly… when did the tune arise and any memories of laying it down?
Glad you like it!
‘Ignition’ started life in a totally different place to where it is now! I was working on quite a melodic track, and I think that I decided to just go scrap this s**t and started afresh and it all just came together really quickly.
I took the drums from the original project, so I had those as a starting point, and had made the bass sound a few days beforehand. I just tweaked that sound and came up with the higher riffs then!
The chords in the intro are just what I typically like to do.
Start slow and build things up.
I love how you sound so wrapped up in the precise, calculated fine tuning of bass frequencies/synths and layers thereof! Really crunchy! Do you have a specific set up in the studio to get it totally precise? Must be fun to get it exactly honed right…
To be honest I just use my ears until I think it sounds right! I also go through about 20,000 versions of everything before getting to the finished product, so there’s also quite a lot of trial and error.
I do like to get the basic riff and then take small snippets and alter them slightly throughout a track, probably don’t hear most of them but they’re there!
I’ve also found that cutting out parts of the sub every time there’s a kick helps to give space, and let the drums breathe a little more.
And on the live front?
Yeah I love seeing people’e reaction – good or bad – to my tracks when I play them out! It’s really interesting to see what works and what doesn’t. On a geeky note – I’ve always wondered if there’s an exact formula you could use?
What’s been some good shows?
I had my first international show in Germany this year, so that was really cool to get under my belt.
I think highlight for me was the Viper Live show in Bristol fairly recently…good times!
And what’s some killers in the box that work well live… even older tunes now being brought back into the set?
One tune that goes off and I love playing is Break’s remix of ‘Gridlock’ by Ram Trilogy. Such a heavy drop and great for mixing in and out of!
I think it’s got a really hard edge but isn’t too processed which I personally find is the case with a lot of the ‘heavier’ stuff at the moment.
I noticed that Friction is into ‘Arabia’…
Yeah really pleased to have support from Friction!
And how do you check new music? Is it radio, clubs, net…
I find new music from all corners, some times I’ll sit on Soundcloud and just listen to loads of people I’ve never heard of but always find something cool!
Other times it’ll be on the radio, or someone’s recommendation. I try and stay away from listening to D&B sometimes so’s not to get exhausted by it all….I find that helps with inspiration for new tracks as well.
What’s next from you?
Working hard on getting my next single done, and going from there!
Any shouts BMotion?
A big thank you to you guys for having me on! A Big shout out the the whole Viper family, especially my Don of a manager Asad!
And one of my cats Bella, for making sure I do as little work as possible if the door is open!
