Slick French duo Bluescreens have delivered something powerful via the new Headroom Part 6 on Viper, and turns out are as colourful in conversation as the name suggests, with some über cool film tips at the end of the spot…
Oh, and did we mention a killer mix too? There’s that as well.
Hi Bluescreens how’s things? What are you doing right now?
All good, Thanks! Um, right now, drinking some coffee!
The track on the new Headroom Part 6 ep’s great… how did ‘Clockaround’ come about? There’s something about it that infers time ticking, of ‘pressure’: was that the intention?
Yeah, the basis of the tune was composed in a ‘Clock Round’: 24 hours.
Sometimes, some tunes take a long time be written. For ‘Clockaround’, it was kind of a challenge to produce a mixable track in a record time.
In 24 hours it was there.
I feel that you guys live to get the music out there, to play live, that’s where it comes alive, is this the case?
Of course, We always think about the raver while producing. It’s even better when we have the chance to test the tunes on the floor while the tune’s still in production.
Do you have a preferred medium from which to DJ? CD, vinyl, sticks, what do you like and why?
Vinyl! We use serato on stage.
We started mixing by discovering DJs like Shadow, Cut Chemist and Krush. So the scratch was an important part of the work.
Also a good way to propose something a little bit different to the audience.
How are you feeling about D&B right now?
Really loving the D&B scene right now! There’s so much new talented artists around, it’s really an amazing journey for all D&B lovers!
It feels like D&B is giving the possibility to get ‘back to the roots’ while writing the future, at the moment.
What are some tunes you’re drawing?
To name one, my – Rémi that is – tune of the moment is Fred V and Grafix ‘Recognize’ (Emperor Remix).
Greg’s ‘Always In The Bag Tune’ is Wilkinson ‘Heartbeat’ (Calyx & Teebee remix)
This leads me to the mix you’ve given us… it’s a big selection: is this typical of what we’d hear you play?
Yep.
It’s clearly how and what we usually play on stage, although the full live show has two more decks and more arms.
To be honest, we clearly make our selections for us, before the audience.
Why’s that?
Because when we play tunes we really love on stage I’m sure everybody sees it!
Back to the Headroom Part 6 ep, could you tell us what we’re in for, what sort of an overall vibe is on there?
I’ll be honest I didn’t even listen to the whole EP before preparing the mix, but now I’d include every tune… ‘cause every tune is worth a play!
The Headroom series is pretty solid: it’s a pleasure to be there with some awesome tunes.
I always think of films/TV when I hear your name ‘Bluescreens’, of production techniques… what inspired your name?
Ha ha! No, not at all.
The name is a wink to ‘Windows’ Blue Screen of Death’… though I think they are black screens of death now.
We – especially Rémi – had some bad vibrations with computers for a while! That can be really tough when you’re a music producer!
And would you have any fave French films you’d share with us? For me I think of La Haine but the list is endless!
R: I’m not really into French movies! I’m an ‘easy watcher’; I really like Marvel’s blockbusters in fact. But I’d say La Grande Vadrouille: this one really stood in my childhood memories!
Oh, and Dobermann from Jan Kounen.
G: I really like French movies: have a look at Un prophète, 13 Tzameti, 36 Quai des Orfèvres.
In case you don’t know, the Luc Besson’s movie Leon is awesome with Jean Reno and Nathalie Portman and it’s in English too by the way. Nikita is a classic too.
