Australian producer and DJ Eden Cubist is launching his all-new label Colours Recordings right out of Melbourne, and we caught up with him to get the lowdown on his musical vision.
So Eden, Colours 001 is out this Monday, what do you think people will like about this release?
Both tunes ‘Action/Baby’ fit well in any set and work in any crowd. The Production is original as I record all the drum hits myself. ‘Action’ has a sneaky dirty bass line that packs the punch. With support from Grooverider it’s guaranteed to bring the freshness you need. With similar hard-hitting drums, ‘Baby’ brings the funk. Influenced by the sounds of Full Cycle, Baby’s mesmerising ‘whooping’ baseline will get the crowd moving in the dance each and every time.
Australia’s dnb scene has obviously been thriving for years now, where is your label looking to stand within that?
The Australian DnB scene is beginning to cross back over to main stream again like it did in 1997. That was the first time I saw Roni Size. I then started collecting vinyl and played my first gig in 2001. The sound is big here at the moment. Parties are really vibing and there’s a whole new generation of people coming into the scene. It’s an exciting time in Melbourne and a perfect time to launch Colours.
What did you set out to achieve with Colours Recordings?
Colours represents a specific sound. Well-produced tunes that work on any dancefloor. It’s drum and bass I play ‘on the up’ within a set. The tunes are both fun and heavy at the same time. They’re tunes to get the crowd moving before I go really deep and nasty.
What other labels do you admire?
The two labels and crews that have influenced me the most are Full Cycle and Propaganda. These labels created a specific sound/vibe that was super funky, fun and heavy. I remember the energy and excitement I used to feel when buying a twelve inch each time these labels had a new release. Then getting home and putting vinyl on the turntable it used to always make the hair on the back of my neck stand up!
Where would you tell drum and bass fans to hit up in Melbourne?
There’s a lot of different crews in Melbourne doing great things. For a deeper, darker tip check out Broken Beat Assault. For an energetic party vibe check out Twisted Audio. And for an upfront party with big sound featuring Heartical Hi Fi Soundsystem check out Wobble. There’s also lots of interesting cross-genre parties. Go to www.melbournebeats.com to get the low down on what’s going on in town. Big up all the Melbourne Crew!
Did you enjoy your spot on D&BTV that time?
Man, it was amazing! I’ve been following DnBArena since the early days. I love the energy and attitude. To play on D&BTV was like a dream come true. Big up Risky and all the D&BArena Crew. I can’t wait to get back over there soon!
Where are you representing Colours recordings this summer?
Well, it’s Winter here right now. lol. It’s even getting too cold to surf. ‘Tis Freeing! I’ll be doing an Australian Tour with MC Wasp soon.
Who would you like to big up from Australia?
There’s so many people. All the peeps that have come to my shows and supported me over the years. Especially, Derek Heartical, AC23, Raider, MC Wasp, MC LowQui, Monogramadikt Brand, Upakut, Effex, Killeye, Keren Dobia plus all the promoters and DJs around town. Peace.
