‘I love tunes like the ones that you end up loving but aren’t sure of at first’
Sounds like lots of covert planning, back and forth fine tuning and cryptic secretive comms went into Sub Zero‘s new Collab project.
OR basically some likeminded chaps simply got together and happily delivered something way off the scale.
Hi, so how’s this year going for you?
Hi yeah it’s been a great year so far and it’s been very busy right from the off which is amazing. Drum and bass is so strong right now is so many different places.
When did the concept of a remix release come about? From the second I heard this I thought it was totally natural and that it came together quick, is that the case?
Yeah initially there was no real concept; I was just enjoying writing music with some good friends and it grew on to the Collab ep as I ended up with a really selection of tracks that I’d written with other artists.
So it was a very natural process which is how I like it. I never set how to head in a particular direction or worry to much about the final outcome. I like to just see where it takes me.
The Collab ep features people like Majistrate: you must see eye to eye, going back now so far? Take us into the tune with him?
Me and Maji are really good friends and have a similar kinda vibe when it comes to music but also offer different attributes. So writing music together seems to work really well and is fun. Which is the key thing music should be enjoyable and when it is good things happen.
The process of writing weapon of choice was really cool we had just been sent each other some sounds back and forth until we had the basis for the track itself then he came up to my studio in Leicester and we finished it off.
Take us into the tune with Dub Motion, it’s awesome.
Was really cool to work Dub Motion.
We’ve actually done a few tracks together but this one seemed to be the one where it really came together well. It was a lot of fun writing it he’s such a talented guy and has a real ear for music.
The track itself I think first started a while ago and we had a few different vocals for it until eventually we had found the ‘oh girl’ one which worked perfect. Gives it that classic soulful sound but still works well in the clubs cause it’s heavy and has a great energy too.
Speaking of random who are some other people you’d like to collab with, alive or dead?!
Would love to work with Becky Hill: I think she’s incredible singer. Also Top Cat would be so sick, he’s just the voice of jungle and instantly recognisable.
There’s obviously a lot of incredible producers that would be great to work with people like Mefjus, TC, Hazard, Annix, Chase & Status… so many ha ha.

‘How To Act’ is a personal fave and Limited is a monster… take us behind the collab. A destroyer.
‘Limited’ is such a sick producer one of the most talented people I know and it’s great to work with him his studio skills are quite remarkable for such a young guy. I can see him going very far but yeah how to act was just a random one really it’s quite a wonky oddball track but it just seems to work.
It’s funny actually the first few times I played it out it didn’t seem to work all that well but I kept playing it and it just started to grow and people just started going mad to it.
I love tunes like the ones that you end up loving but aren’t sure of at first. It’s a real grower.
You are playing a lot so tell us some fave places to DJ…
Yeah, it’s a busy time as always a lot of touring which is great we’re doing the 20 years of Playaz tour which is a lot of fun. Fabric is always my fav spot but also Belgium has exploded especially with jump up.
And what tune is in your head?
Tune in my head is RATM ‘Bomb Track’ ha ha I was just at the gym and this in my headphones.
