All eyes are on Marky this week as his label releases the immaculate Sounds Of The Innerground album AND hosts a marathon All Night Long gig with Basslaced in Fire, London this Saturday… A night that lives up to its name!
We thought we’d give him a call and see how he prepares for such a feature endurance. And yes, we asked him exactly what he does when that dreaded call of nature comes!
Read on for Marky’s marathon tips plus a chance to win a pair of tickets!
All Night Long…. How long exactly?
I think it’s 6 hours officially from midnight til close. Of course, if I can push it a bit further I will!
That’s a marathon set! How do you prepare for such a long journey?
To be honest I would say that there is less preparation for this than a short set. When you play a short set you are trying to think of all your heavy hitting tunes and forcing as many of them into an hour as possible. This is why I prefer the long sets because it allows me and the crowd to get into a groove and truly explore the genre to pick out some classics old, current and forthcoming.
Cool. Any tricks you can share to fellow DJs?
You have to pay attention to the crowd, and I don’t mean just the guys in the front; I mean try and picture what the people at the back are doing. Are they into it? Are you losing them? Do you need to play harder/faster etc etc. If you don’t pay attention to the crowd then it will not work. I always try and play a bit of something for everybody so that they can all stay engaged with what I am playing and what I am doing; the journey we are all going on is a long one so we need everyone’s participation.
Awkward question but it’s what everyone thinks with these massive all night DJ sets… What’s the score with toilet breaks?
You do your best not to, but of course sometimes it’s unavoidable. The best thing is to not drink beer! Water is the best thing because it hydrates you. Most of the time though you are so focussed on what you are doing that you don’t even realise until the end of the set, so generally it isn’t a problem.
You’ve done these type of lengthy sets before – do you recommend a particular meal or diet before you go deep in the mix for hours and hours? DJs need sustenance!
Not really, just eat well, but don’t overeat. If you eat too much then you get all groggy and it takes a while to get into it. Keep it light but full of goodness!
