Got any plans for Saturday October 6?
Fancy checking out the likes of Total Science, Need For Mirrors, Amoss, Survival, Villem and many more?
Then look no further than Fractured Foundation, a new London-based bash held at Brixton Jamm. We have several pairs of tickets up for grabs PLUS, just to make this extra special, the entire Flexout Audio back catalogue!
Establishing a brand new party is one of the hardest challenges any promoter can step to. Especially in big old London Town – a city where incredible D&B nights are hosted on a weekly basis.
On August 10 Fractured Foundation stepped up to that very challenge. And, with a lot of blood, sweat, tears and swearwords, they succeeded in putting themselves on the map with distinction.
Next weekend they return with another ideal Saturday night showcase of all things D&B plus a strong dose of dubstep and future garage. With the aforementioned line-up monsters Total Science, Need For Mirrors, Amoss, Survival, Villem and Retraflex plus the promoters Intracut and Subtraction themselves and more, it looks set to be a belter.
PLUS they’re running in association with Flexout Audio who’ve kindly given us some digital bundles of their back catalogue including cuts from the likes of Kasra, dRamatic & dbAudio, Quantax, Philth, Tru:Tek, Rutile and loads more. There’s a chance for you to win all of this, plus tickets below. But first, we locked in Intracut to see how life as a new promoter is working out.
Before we became promoters we…
“Had a bit of disposable income, enjoyed raving (have done for 17 years!) and had always chatted about putting on similar nights, but with our own personal touches to make them more succinct with the style of D&B we wanted all at one event. Without wanting to make it sound too depressing we both despised our day jobs too (still do!); so we pooled together what little bit of wedge we had and came up with the hair-brained idea to put on our own quality drum and bass nights. And here we are…”
The biggest influence for us to start up Fractured Foundation was…
“To push a certain kind of sound. We really wanted to put on a night that explores the deeper sound of D&B. Having been ravers and DJs since the mid-nineties we’ve had countless conversations in the small hours about sorting out some quality raves. I was sat at work one day and just thought ‘fuck it, if I don’t do it know I’ll regret not trying this for the rest of my life’ so called a few clubs, got some artwork together and set up some meetings.”
We came up with the name Fractured Foundation…
“I’d been playing with a few ideas, logos and artwork and it all came about quite organically. The wording itself was actually two fold – I wanted to incorporate the sort of heavy and distorted bass notion with the collective vibe, and for any DJ or MC that was booked for our nights to be part of something and really feel involved. Also we’ve wanted to develop and give any new talent that we reckon should be given a chance to play out the potential to do that.”
Our first night was…
“An extremely ambitious attempt to pull away loyal D&B clubbers from very well established nights. We wanted to bring together some of our favourite artists and long-standing legends in the scene – Ulterior Motive, Fracture, Survival, Genotype – with a very neat selection of up-and-coming people – Amoss, Clarity, Overlook – as well as a supporting a load of fresh talent – Demshy B2B Bear, Sweetpea, Danwell and Venza. We were really serious about incorporating a full spectrum of DJs which included the big hitters and some future heavyweights to give the night a huge sense of occasion but also a strong focus on the development of new talent – speaking of which, if you are budding new DJ please send us your best mix with a chance to play at one of our future events!”
Our second night will be….
“One to remember, trust us. We learnt a few things from the first event and are incorporating a few different vibes to mix things up a bit. Bit of dubstep, future garage and an alternative set or two for the second room. Somehow we’ve got a bigger line up than the first, whilst still giving a couple of new DJs a chance to show their skills.”
The biggest lesson we learnt hosting our first party was…
“You can’t do enough to promote yourselves! It’s such a competitive business with so many established nights dominating the market that to get respect and pull people away from those events is a really tough game, and rightly so. In London there’s always a hefty choice of D&B most weekends, so why would anyone come to a night they’d never heard of when they could go somewhere they know would have a good vibe? You really need to have the right mix of top notch artists and a solid promo plan to get the masses excited about what you’re trying to achieve.”
