As the bewitching and ambitious The Light ep drops on Demand, Eastcolors spoke to us from Russia about flux, personal grief and salad vegetables.
Variation: the shifting tone of The Light. Did you enjoy the process of creating this ep?
This was absolutely amazing project. It’s the first time I’ve got non-D&B remixes of my won work and they are so cool!
This release has collected so much great producers, except me. Ha ha.
But more about you sir: if there was an Eastcolors ALBUM what variation would we find in terms of sounds and styles?
Oh it’s a hard question.
Go on, try. What’s the sound in four words?
I always struggle to describe my sound. I think the words I would use are: Simple. Dark. Groovy. Melodic.
& how do you retain your own sound when all the time you must be hearing new sounds coming at you from all angles?
It’s not good to copy from others. When I make solo music I want the final tune to only consist of my original ideas. And for example I’d never put a trap beat in my tunes!
Do you have a little production trick that you use? I spoke to you once before about a similar topic.
Well, when I’m working on a tune and I’m stuck with idea I just let it play in the background and switch to a browser and start surfing the internet and just listen too the loop like… well, like someone else would do. When I listen it in the background ideas always come up, I don’t know why but it always works for me.
What’s something else that people may not know about you?
I hate cucumbers.
OK. Why “The Light”? Does it relate to the name ‘Eastcolors’? As in a new dawn or something?
Well, I made this tune as a present to my girlfriend to show her my love, and the name was based on those feelings.
That’s really beautiful.
Unfortunately, we broke up and the light turns to dark for a while.
Ah. This is about variation. So what seasons do you like? I can’t help thinking about nature with The Light.
Basically it’s all cold seasons like deep autumn, winter, late spring. But it depends.
How were the various collabs chosen? I am a fan of Phil T.
Well, I’ve known Phil for some time, and I’ve always been a fan of his music. When Carlos [Demand] suggested an idea of a remix ep I told him I wanted a remix from Phil. Later I spoke with Phil and to my pleasure he agreed. The Troy Gunner remix is my fav.
Who is Noel? GIVE IT UP FOR NOOOOOOOOEL!
Ha ha, Noel is an old friend from my town. He is the guy who made the bass sound in ‘Cracker!

Speaking of your town, what’s the scene like near you?
It’s hard to believe how a city in the middle of nowhere can held so much big gigs! Recently there was a gig with Maztek, Misanthrop and Mind Vortex. People here really like the hard sound, like neurofunk. It impacts on me as I’d like to play more liquid tunes but unfortunately people on our dancefloors wouldn’t react. I’m moving to a Saint-Petersburg soon, so i’ll see how it changes there.
What sounds are you checking yourself?
Maybe some melodic Dubstep, Phaeleh is someone I admire in this range of music. Dub, techno, garage as well… as long as the music’s good I’m there.
Finally, shouts to Noel and who else?
Shout to Carlos Keen for organizing this EP and all absolutely amazing producers who been involved in this project! Love you guys!
