SUper-collaborator, SUper-producer. He’s omnivorous Hungarian mastermind Chris.SU. He lives and breathes this music 27 hours a day. Even his wedding night was testimony to the love he has for D&B (as you will see)… It’s his FATE. Pardon the pun.
A fitting way to ask him about the harmony implied by his recent collab with vocalist Mira then.
Hello Chris. How did ‘Together in the Night’ come about sir?
When I wrote this track I wanted to achieve an uplifting and epic feel, almost ‘liquidy’. Yet on a harder tip. I always try to make tunes which can possibly work both in a rave or when you listen to it at home. When Mira came up with her ideas for the vocal, I immediately felt it had the potential to be a cool tune, so we went to have a few studio sessions, recorded the vocals… and it was a wrap.

It fits in with the ethos of FATE, your label, does it not?
My label’s concept is pretty simple: fat beats with emotions.
And The Burning? Love the vocal treatment it reminds me of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares in a way. That track does what it says on the tin!!
Stu from State of Mind was touring in Europe in 2011, he visited us in Budapest and we layed down the main idea of the track, including the intro and the hypnotic synthline which can be heard towards the second breakdown. We had a test mix of the tune on ‘dubplate’ for a while but we both felt something was missing, then I sent the work files to Stu and he finished it in his studio back in Auckland.
I think he transformed the original tune into a killer so credits to him!
So this is the first phase of FATE, what’s next?
I’m currently working on FATE002 and 003 at the moment. I wanted to focus mainly on my production with my label and this inspires me a lot, I have a great deal of ideas in my mind at the moment!
The collabs are rich with you aren’t they?
I have contacted some vocalists and MCs who I wanted to work with to see whether they’d be interested participating with a track in my FATE project and I was very happy that so many people were keen on a collab. We’re going to make a new one with MC Fedora following our ‘Guardian Angel’ recently released on Subtitles Music for example…

… amongst others like Stamina MC, MC Lowqui, Stapleton, MC Kyrptomedic and MC Fava from Germany, MC Daxta from Austria, to name a few. I’m also planning collabs with fellow Hungarian producers Jade and Mindscape.
Tell me about the scene there in Hungary? Who are some other names in the scene we should look out for?
I’m proud to say there are a lot of talented producers in Hungary. Aside the healthy competition who can make better sounding tunes we always tried to help each other. Gamma from Spinline has some cool new tunes, and the Magical Gravity boys who have had some success on Viper already, are making cool bangers lately, also Zero Method, Incident and Klay are names to keep an eye on, in my opinion.
Is now a SU-itable time to ask you… ?
Ha ha! I wanted to clear the meaning of .SU once and for all: it’s coming from the name of a group of friends from high school which was called ‘Suckerz United’. When we were 15, none of us really had girlfriends, and in general we sucked. We were sitting in front of the computer all day long, nerding around, so we thought we couldn’t we be ‘Suckerz’ together, and aside real life meetings, we were discussing our day-to-day problems on an e-mail mailing list, how we could improve to have more luck in life?! There are actually nine members of SU in total, ib.su for example used to be an editor of the Hungariand D&B website drumanbass.hu and he introduced D&B to me, and flack.su is an awesome breaks producer.
Can you give us FIVE SU-PER D&B SLAYERS?
Ed Rush & Optical ‘Gas Mask’ Virus
I heard this tune at a friend’s place [big up Ib.SU!] on vinyl in 1999 and I was immediately blown away! It was one of the first tunes that made me to start making D&B.
Goldie ft. Diane Charlemagne ‘Inner City Life’ Metalheadz
This was one of the first music videos I’ve seen on TV and it was a totally new sound to me at that time and it caused me to go digging further into the genre.
Bad Company ‘The Nine’ BC
I went to a rave as an attendant for the first time in Budapest when Fresh & Vegas was playing as Bad Company and this track was already a massive anthem in 1999. The party was held at an old empty building – warehouse style – called Royal, which was renovated since then and turned into a 5 star hotel and – fate again or coincidence? The afterparty of my wedding was held at the same place featuring DJs like Klute, Bailey, Ant TC1, D.kay & Ill.Skillz, Concord Dawn, Stamina MC, Spinline, Tactile, Matt-U.
Konflict ‘Messiah’ Renegade Hardware
I heard this from dubplate played by Grooverider in 2001, I clearly remember he has put on a set of golden pickups on the decks before he started playing.
This was the tune of the night and I think he rewound it 2-3 times. The rest is history.
Klute ‘I:Minder’ 31 Records
I met my future wife in Budapest on a party with Klute in December 2001 and this track was still on dubplate, and pretty sure we’ve heard it while we had our first kiss with her! A few years later – maybe fate? Well, I got introduced to Klute by DJ Trace and I started to release tracks on his label Commercial Suicide.
